# Redis

> Keep Aikeedo's background jobs in Redis, Valkey, Dragonfly, ElastiCache or Upstash.

## Overview

Redis keeps jobs in memory, so they are added and taken quickly. The adapter works with anything that speaks the Redis protocol: Redis, Valkey, Dragonfly, Amazon ElastiCache and Upstash. It is the only adapter that lists its jobs on the Queue page; the others show counts only.

No PHP extension is needed. The adapter uses the `redis` extension when it is loaded, which is faster, and the built-in Predis client otherwise, so it also works on shared hosting with a hosted Redis such as Upstash.

## Configuration

**1. Get a Redis server**

Use a Redis on your server, or create a hosted database. On [Upstash](https://upstash.com), create a Redis database and copy its connection URL, which looks like `rediss://default:PASSWORD@HOST.upstash.io:6379`.

**2. Enter the connection**

Go to **Settings → System → Queue adapters → Redis** and paste the **Connection URL**. A URL starting with `rediss://` uses TLS, which hosted services need.

To type the details in instead, click **Enter host, port and password separately**, then fill in **Host and port**, **Username**, **Password** and **Database**, and turn on **Use TLS** if your server needs it. Any URL already entered is split into these fields, and saving builds the URL from them. **Use a connection URL instead** switches back.

**3. Test and enable**

Turn on **Status** and press **Save changes**. Saving tests the connection first, and shows the service's error if it fails. Then choose Redis on the **Queue** page.

## Settings

| Setting | Description |
| - | - |
| Key prefix | Every key starts with it (default `aikeedo`). Change it to share one Redis database between installations. |
| Queues | Optional. Queues are found once a job is added to them; list any a worker should watch from the start. |

> [!NOTE]
>
> Keys are grouped under one hash tag (`{aikeedo}:…`), so the adapter also works on a Redis Cluster.
