# Jina

> Use Jina for web search, for reading web pages built with JavaScript, and for reading scanned PDFs in chat. One API key covers all three.

## Introduction

[Jina](https://jina.ai) provides three services Aikeedo can use in chat:

* **Search**: a [web search provider](https://docs.aikeedo.com/advanced/web-search-and-reading.md#web-search).
* **Reader for web pages**: a [web page reader](https://docs.aikeedo.com/advanced/web-search-and-reading.md#web-page-reader) that also renders pages built with JavaScript.
* **Reader for files**: a [file reader](https://docs.aikeedo.com/advanced/file-reading.md#file-reader) that also reads scanned PDFs with OCR.

You can use any of them on its own. All three share one API key.

## Setting up

**1. Get an API key**

Sign in to Jina and open the [API key manager](https://jina.ai/api-dashboard/key-manager). Copy your key.

**2. Add it to Aikeedo**

Go to **Settings → Integrations → Jina**, paste the key into **API Key**, and click **Save changes**.

**3. Choose where to use it**

In **Settings → Features → Chat**, pick Jina as the **Search provider**, the **Web page reader**, the **File reader**, or any of them.

### Self-hosted reader

If you run Jina's reader yourself, enter its addresses under **Self-hosted reader**: the **Search URL** (normally `https://s.jina.ai/`) and the **Reader URL** (normally `https://r.jina.ai/`). Leave them empty to use the hosted Jina APIs.

## Credits

Users are charged at the **Jina Search** rate per search and at the **Jina Reader** rate per token read, under **Settings → Finance → Credit ratios**. Pages and files read on your server are not charged.

> [!TIP]
>
> Leave **Use only as fallback** on for the web page and file readers. Jina is then called only for the pages and files your server can't read, which keeps Jina usage low.

## Troubleshooting

> [accordion] Jina isn't offered as a provider, or the setting shows a warning
>
> Save the API key under **Settings → Integrations → Jina** first.

> [accordion] Requests fail with an authentication or quota error
>
> Check the key and your balance in the Jina dashboard.
