# Exchange Rates

> Convert prices between currencies with an automatic rate provider, your own fixed rates, or both.

## Introduction

Plan prices are set in your [default currency](https://docs.aikeedo.com/billing/overview.md#default-currency). Aikeedo converts them when a payment gateway charges in another currency, and when it adds up revenue, such as MRR, from orders in several currencies.

Rates come from two places:

* A **rate provider**, a service that keeps rates up to date automatically, such as [CurrencyAPI](https://docs.aikeedo.com/integrations/currency-api.md).
* **Custom rates**, fixed rates you set yourself for particular currencies.

You can use either, or both. A custom rate always wins over the provider's rate for its currency.

## The Exchange page

Go to **Settings → Finance → Exchange**.

* **Rate providers** lists the installed providers. The one you use is marked **In use**. Click a provider to enter its settings, such as an API key.
* **Custom rates** shows the currencies you have set a rate for. Hover over a currency to see its rate. Click **Manage custom rates** to change them.

Choose which provider to use under **Settings → Billing → Currency rate provider**. More providers can be added with plugins.

## Custom rates

Custom rates are useful when you want to charge a fixed rate in a local currency, or when no provider covers a currency.

1. Go to **Settings → Finance → Exchange** and click **Manage custom rates**. **Set custom rates** under **Settings → Billing** opens the same page.
2. Click **Add currency** and choose a currency.
3. Enter how many units of it equal **1 USD**. Rates are always per 1 USD, even if your default currency isn't USD. If you use a rate provider, its current rate is shown under the field for comparison.
4. Click **Save changes**.

To stop using a custom rate, remove its row and save. The currency then goes back to the provider's rate.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Custom rates are never updated automatically. Keep them up to date yourself, or use a rate provider for currencies that move often.

## How conversion works

* When neither currency has a custom rate, the provider's rate is used.
* When either has one, both are converted through USD, using the custom rate where there is one and the provider's rate for the other.
* **Without a provider**, only USD and the currencies with a custom rate are converted. Any other currency is treated as equal to USD, one to one.

The admin dashboard warns that MRR can't be calculated correctly only when an order's currency has no rate at all.
